Local Design Journal

Write for us

We welcome considered pitches about the design of local buildings, streets, shared spaces, objects and visual communication. A useful proposal gives readers a way to notice and understand a specific design choice without relying on specialist knowledge.

What makes a strong pitch

Send a focused idea, a working title and a short explanation of the question the piece will answer. Tell us what a reader will be able to see or understand afterward, and identify the examples or source material the piece would need. We favour distinct subjects, clear comparisons and useful explanations over broad claims that design is good or bad.

Our editorial expectations

Contributions should be original, carefully checked and written in plain English. Separate what can be observed from what is interpretation, identify sources for factual claims and disclose relevant interests. Avoid unsupported claims about a real place or its users. We may edit for clarity, accuracy, length and fit, and will discuss substantial changes with contributors.

How to send a proposal

Send pitches and questions through the Contact page, choosing the editorial question option and including your idea in the message. Please propose the article rather than sending a finished piece unless we have asked for one. A proposal is not a promise of publication.

Our point of view

Design is never just decoration

A handle, sign or doorway makes a claim about how something should be used. We look for the decisions behind that claim, including who benefits and what gets overlooked.
