Local Design Journal

About

Local Design Journal is an independent-minded publication about the design choices visible in local buildings, streets, shared places and everyday objects. It is for curious readers who want to understand why a place works as it does, not just whether it looks polished.

What we look at

We examine the details people encounter and use: a doorway that signals where to enter, a street layout that shapes a route, a public space that makes lingering possible, or a sign that communicates more by its placement than its wording. The aim is to explain the design decision and its consequences in plain language.

Who it is for

You do not need design training to read the built world. Our readers may be interested in a familiar street, curious about a building they pass, or trying to put words to why an object feels awkward to use. We make room for informed questions without pretending every design choice has one correct answer.

How we approach it

We compare what a design makes easier with what it makes harder. We distinguish observation from interpretation, avoid treating appearance as proof of performance, and explain uncertainty where a detail cannot tell the whole story. We favour durable ideas readers can apply to places they know.

Our point of view

Design is never just decoration

A handle, sign or doorway makes a claim about how something should be used. We look for the decisions behind that claim, including who benefits and what gets overlooked.
